Victorian (1870\'s) Enamel on Porcelain hand-painted Madonna and Child Italian brooch with sterling silver \"frame\". This beautifully colored and detailed painting is probably a copy of a 16th -17th Century Italian artist. The oval brooch measures 2-1/2\"(6.4cm) x 2\"(5cm) while the painted oval measures 2\"(5cm) x 1-5/8\"(4.1cm). Surrounding the painted porcelain is a Greek Key design sterling silver \"frame\". The back of the porcelain is marked \"78\" and \"b\". The rear of the brooch has a suspension loop in addition to the pin closure. Total weight of the brooch is 24.3 grams. These hand-painted Italian brooches were actually created as souvenir pieces for the wealthy Victorian traveler, so the brooch features a long, sturdy pin to attach to thick Victorian garments.
