Gorgeous example of a Victorian pietra dura mosaic flower brooch. This lovely piece is set with gemstones of black onyx, turquoise, and red carnelian or jasper on a slate back. The others I\'m not sure of because the shading is so incredibly done. Pietra Dura is a term for the inlay technique of using cut and fitted, highly polished colored stones to create images. The brooch has a fancy filigree frame. It has a hinged tube style pin stem, the old style C clasp has been professionally replaced with a secure safety clasp. The brooch is signed on the back with the Italian 800 silver mark. This is a mark for 80% silver, not quite sterling grade, but it is the grade for this type of Victorian silver jewelry made in Italy. The brooch measures 1 7/8\" across and is 1 5/8\" wide. The brooch is polished to a high shine - truly stunning! Pietra Dura appeared in Rome in the 16th century and is a highly collectible antique treasure today.
