Absolutely stunning,elaboratelydecorated sterling silver Victorian, gilded presentation snuff box by George Loveridge & Co, hallmarked 1897. The presentation engraving reads: PRESENTED TO T.H. Whalley Esq. BY HIS COLLEAGUES AS A TOKEN OF ESTEEM ON HIS RETIREMENT FROM THE SERVICE OF THE MERSEY DOCKS & HARBOUR BOARD August 1897\".

Mersey Docks & Harbour Board (MDHB): The MDHB took over the running of Liverpool Docks in 1858. It owned and administered the dock facilities of the Port of Liverpool on the River Mersey, England. In 1972 it was reconstituted as \"The Mersey Docks & Harbour Company\" as it needed to raise money for new building initiatives and projects. At the time the silver snuff box was presented, towards the end of Queen Victoria\'s reign, Liverpool was one of the busiest ports in the world with many people departing from there for America, Canada etc.
