MAI THRONG THU“LADY WITH FLOWER”SIGNED, NUMBERED, AND DATED LITHOGRAPHSTAMPED WITH ARTIST’S SEAL
A rare opportunity to purchase a signed, Mai Thu lithograph. Usually only found at some of the high end sale houses, the original paintings, lithographs, and prints sell for very high prices. Anoriginal Mai Thu painting can sell for $50,000 or more. Lithographs can sell for $10,000 or more.
This lithograph is in the medium that Mai Thu was most known for, Gouache and ink on silk with a paper backing. Closeup photos reveal the silk material that was used in thispainting, helping to signify the authenticity of the piece. The seal is partially transparent and seems a bit raised off of the silk background, another Mai Thu staple on all of his works.
This piece measures approximately 7” x 5” (17.5 cm x 12 cm). The size is another way to identify the authenticity of the piece. The frame is gold leaf over wood, and in very good condition for it’s age.
This lithograph was part of a book ofpoems for which Mai Thu provided lithographs for illustrations in the book. The book had a lacquer cover and is very expensive and very hard to find. My mother purchased this lithograph in the mid to late 1960’s in New York City, and it appears that it may have been removed from the book of poems and framed and sold as an individual lithograph. Some of the binding marks may be visible in the upper left hand side and along the left side of the painting. I cannot verify that, though. This piece was sold with thetitle“Oriental Ladies Gold Silk Mats” and a frame number. No reference to the artist was given by the seller.
A little about the artist:Mai Trung Thứ, or Mai Thứ, (1906-1980) was a Vietnamese‑French painter. He was one of the graduates of the first entering class of the École des Beaux-Arts de l\'Indochine in Hanoi. He lived and worked mostly in France. His works are very sought after in the Art world, with original paintings saleing for astronomical prices. Original works sell for $50,000 or more.
