Vintage 1870\'s Diminutive Rosewood & Brass Bow Drill, Jeweler, Piano Maker :

Here we have aVintage1870\'s Diminutive Rosewood & BrassJeweler or Piano MakerBow Drill. The bow drill has been in use for centuries as one of the first tools used to drill a hole. The earliest adopters of the tool were stone masons, who used the first heavy and crude tools, and the jewelers and musical instrument makers, particularly piano makers, who used the finely crafted tools of Rosewood, brass, bone, etc.

This very nice early example (identified by the style and brass knurling work) is made from a steel shaft (with spool) and outfitted with a nicely shaped Rosewood handle that has lightly turned rings and beautiful brass fittings. There is a tight age-related crack on one side of the handle. The Drill has no Maker name, but does have what I believe, are two imprints of the owner\'s name on the handle (looks like WHITCAKE). The entire handle has nice original patina finishes. The chuck is a friction-fit type with a 3/16\" hole. The spool revolves well and has a nice, no wobble, solid feel. A nice, rarely seen small sizepiece to add to your collection. Drill is 6\" Long.
\'Apologies\' - the age crack.**Please remember to leave response.I will gladly reciprocate. :-)
