Vintage 1930\'s Copper Plate Etching Print \"Ancient Refuge\" by R. RoubilardHere is a nice, old vintage print circa 1935 titled \"#3 Ancient Refuge\" by French artist, R. Roubilard. The back has an old label which say this: Etching in Color from Etched Copper Plate, #3 Ancient Refuge, Original by R. Roubilard, Copper Plate being inked in Colors, Limited Edition, Published in the USA, Copyrighted by J. M. Co., Chicago, Illinois.
This etching is in an old mellow gold gilt wood frame which is in great condition. An original Art Deco era French style mat frames the art. It is cream color with subtle color lines in it which pick up the color in the etching. See close-up photos of this great mat. The framed art measures 15 1/4\" High by 19\" Wide. The art itself which shows in the frame measures 9 1/2\" High by 13 1/4\" Wide. This etching is signed at the bottom \"Ancient Refuge\" on the left and Roubilard on the right.
The back needed repapering so I photographed the back before repapering and afterwards. I attached the original label to the new backing so its provenance stays with the art.
Roubilard painted old world village scenes. He loved old architecture and painted and drew many old homes and buildings. He painted during the Romantic era in France and specifically in the Tonalism movement. I love the feeling of this etching. The title is perfect for this piece. It is a painting of a beautiful old home built solidly with masonry blocks. It is pleasantly situated on the river. A steeple juts up behind the house. Perhaps clergy live here. This beautiful home on the river evokes feelings of stability and continuity. You know this old estate has withstood and will continue to stand only improving with age and patina. It is a romantic refuge painted lovingly by Roubilard. He too must have admired this fine old ruin\'s solid foundations. _gsrx_vers_568 (GS 6.7.3 (568))
