This is a treasure trove for early aviation enthusiasts. Edward Bailey was born in 1920 and obviously loved the (newish) technology of planes, and following the famous aviators as they made incredible journeys. There are over 130 (I think 139...I counted twice but started to go cross eyed) newspaper clippings in this scrapbook. Almost all of them (I think two or three are from the 1980s) are originals from the 1930s. There is a letter inviting Mr. Bailey to employment at the Glenn L Martin Company in Baltimore in June 1940, along with an original Glenn L Martin Company handbook.
This scrapbook is not in great condition, the newspaper articles and photographs are yellowed and aging but have done well for themselves over the past 85 years or so.
I took the time to glean as many names of people and planes as I could from the clippings, the following list is not comprehensive: Colonel Charles A Lindbergh; Anne Lindbergh; Ruth Nichols; Wiley Post; Harold Gatty; Major James Doolittle; Amelia Earhart Putnam
There are photos and mentions of the following aircraft: Monoplanes; pontoon planes; biplanes; seaplanes; Lockheed Sirius; Heinkel HE-70; Pussmoth; DOX; Gliders; \"Winnie Mae\"; Dornier DO-X seaplane; British submarine M-2 with plane; triplanes; Graf Zeppelin; dirigible; autogiro; Junkers JU-52; Junkers D-2500; Airships Akron, Los Angeles, Macon...and more
Most of these clippings are from the Berkshire Eagle, in western Massachusetts. There are dates of June 27, 1933; June 5, 1931; and December 24, 1934.There are clippings that Mr. Bailey kept from the May 9, 1985 Berkshire Eagle that refer back to originals he had in his scrapbook about an autogiro landing at the local airport. It seems he was an avid aviation buff his entire life.
There are more clippings than I have pictured here, I hope you add them to your collection and enjoy them as much as he did.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
