Vintage 1938 Parker Royal Challenger Mechanical Pencil with a classic black and gray herringbone pattern. As you can see from the photos, this pencil is in good condition for its age.
The body of the pencil is in good shape with not cracks or bite marks visible. The pencil is not engraved or personalized in any way. The top twists smoothly with no binding or grinding. The cap slides off to reveal the eraser. The eraser shows obvious signs of use. The pencil has a Parker Lead Cartridge, but it is empty. Since there is no lead, I do not know if the pencil will need any additional service or parts to function. The clip is in the shape of a sword or dagger. The clip is firmly attached to the cap and it sits snug to the body of the cap. When the cap is set on the body, there is a very narrow, but visible, gap between them. I assume this is to allow the cap to turn freely without rubbing on the body.
The body of the pencil is marked \"Parker Royal Challenger\" and it has the date code \"18\". I believe this means the pencil was made in the first quarter of 1938. According to my research, the Royal Challenger was introduced in 1937. Late in 1937, Parker redesigned the Royal Challenger and added a tapered clip. Given the date code, this pencil was produced just after the redesign, but likely while they still had sword clips in stock.
I have lightly cleaned this pencil using nonabrasive techniques. My cleaning included the use of a very mild cleaner to remove any oils and residue from the body. After cleaning, I thoroughly dried the pencil.
