Up for sale is Chein\'s earliest tea set, issued in 1935. It is said to represent Krazy Kat, though I don\'t know who all the characters are on the pieces. This set has a red background; in 1956, the company reissued the same design with a yellow background. I have that set listed in a separate sale. The red set was made until 1959; this one most likely dates to the 1940s, indicated by the early shield logo on the bottom of the cup.
Included in this sale are three pieces: one cup, one plate and one teapot. The set is in fair to good condition.
SCENES:Cup: The bust of Krazy Kat holding a cup of tea is illustrated on both sides of the cup.Plate: Krazy Kat sits on a yellow stool at a yellow table eating a cookie, while a female cat in a red-and-white apron pours him a cup of tea. The background wall is light-blue with a yellow baseboard and green floor. Krazy Kat wears a red top, shorts and shoes.Teapot: The same image Krazy Kat on the cup is shown twice on the top of the teapot, along with the bust of a pig and a comical bull.DIMENSIONS:Cup: 2 1/4\" diameter x 1 1/4\" tallPlate: 4 1/4\" diameterTeapot: 4 3/4\" wide (tip of spout to end of handle) x 1 3/4\" tall
CONDITION:Cup: One of the images of Krazy Kat is marred by a 1/2\"-diameter circle of paint loss. There is also some litho loss just below the same figure. There is a little spotting on the rest of the litho. There is wear on the handle and rim, as well as a little on the inside of the cup.Plate: There are a number of dents and dings on the plate, and it no longer lays flat. There are some small areas of paint loss on the image and red border, and there is some rim wear.Teapot: There are some tiny flea bites on the litho, as well as a little wear around the opening of the pot. There is paint loss on the spout and on two large areas on the bottom yellow part of the pot.
