I bet you don\'t have one of these. I\'ll even go as far to wager you haven\'t seen one of these in person and maybe haven\'t even heard of this model before. Oh you might have seen Sawyer Oswego vises before, possibly even a rotating model like this one but I\'d gamble you didn\'t know the baby 2 1/2\" jaw version existed. The NuType vise line is the model that launched a billion import clones still made and sold by the boatloads today. They all come in from overseas and can be had for cheap. But they\'re nothing like this one. This is the original and, more importantly, it was manufactured in the USA. This is a top tier vise made by a fantastic manufacturer back in the day. Sadly, this company is long gone now. This particular model is the No.2½P. It is a rare bird indeed. I can\'t even be certain if another one of these still exists. If you want a vise that\'s incredibly unique and nobody else will have then this is one you\'ll be proud to have in your collection.
Let\'s talk about what makes this vise unique in case you\'re not familiar with the design. In a nutshell, the front of the vise rotates so you can easily get on your work from any angle. Unlike the modern-day import copies the rotating mechanism on this one is self locking. There\'s a spring loaded pin in the rear, you can\'t see it, which pushes itself into detents on rear cap, there\'s a ring of detents there. You hear and feel a satisfying click in each position. Then, when you tighten the vise handle the entire mechanism is locked into position along with whatever work you have in the jaws. Need a pipe vise? No problem, just loosen the vise, spin the front assembly so the pipe vise jaws are facing up. It\'s incredibly handy. The swivel locking system with trapped wrench (So you don\'t lose it.) is also great to use. This is a very well thought out vise. You can see in the photos that I recreated the original Patent decal. You can view the original patent detailsHERE &HERE. Those are 1920\'s patents, this vise is stamped 1942 in a few spots. This is an industrial quality vise made to the highest standards. It is made to last basically forever and this vise, even at over 70 years old, could pass for a year old. It\'s just in fantastic condition. To the best of my knowledge this vise is complete and every single part on this vise, with the exception of my decals, is original. I have absolutely no reason to believe anything has been replaced. It\'s stunning.
I took my time on this one, I wanted to get it right. I was thorough and detailed in my approach. Being 3/4 of a century old the finish was well worn and it was time for some attention. The vise was completely disassembled, there\'s a ton of parts on this vise so it took a while. Each and every part was detail cleaned. Threads were chased and all the old crud was removed and smoothed. I stripped and cleaned every square inch of this vise, I wanted it to be a perfectly operating piece of precise machinery. And it is. I\'ve included a couple of disassembled shots in the last gallery photo so you can see the effort put into this one. The cast iron parts were warmed in an oven to 200° and then painted. I chose my favorite color for old, rare American vises and that\'s Oil Rubbed Bronze enamel. The finish is lightly textured. This is a classic color and very tasteful for the era. Three coats were applied and each one was baked at the same temperature for 30 minutes. This gives a tremendous finish, both in appearance and quality. You\'ll love looking at this thing in person. To add a little flair I decided to paint the wrench and thread lock-nut a vivid red. I find this to be a nice contrast with just the right amount of pop. It\'s a great looking vise, no doubt about that. Nothing was spared in this vise\'s restoration. None of the friction surfaces have paint on them for smooth operation that will last. Finally the vise was reassembled with synthetic lubricant on the action areas. It opens and closes nicer than I can put into words, this is one smooth vise. The jaws clamp tight and flush just how you want them to. Speaking of jaws; the inserts, all seven of them, are in terrific condition. I promise, you will be impressed with this vise when you use it. The last step was the US Patent recreation decal which matches the original and a Made In USA decal which easily peels off if you think it\'s out of place. I like it though.
I could dote on this vise over many paragraphs and still wonder if I\'ve covered everything I love about it. This vise has it all. The most utility and function you could ask for in a vise. Vintage USA made quality. Obscene rarity. Quality restoration. Incredible condition. Flawless function. Honestly, what more could you ask for in a prized gem of a vise? Whoever ends up with this one is going to be a very happy tinkerer for many decades to come. Don\'t be surprised if your kids start sucking up to you because somebody is going to want this one handed down to them. So, whoever ends up the high buyer, enjoy this rare, wonderful tool.
