Here is a vintage Japanese lacquer ware (lacquerware?) set of 8 bowls with lids and 5 plates. They are seriously shiny black with gold trim. The 8 footed bowls measure 4 11/16\" in diameter and 2 1/4\" tall. The lids are 4 5/16\" in diameter and 1 3/8\" tall. They can also be turned upside down to become little footed bowls. The 5 plates are 6 3/4\" in diameter and sit 1 1/16\" above the table at their gold rims. These could also be considered shallow bowls.The bowls and plates are marked on the bottoms \"Made In Japan\".The 21 piece set weighs 2 pounds 12.5 ounces. These are so much more than miso soup or rice bowls. With their light weight they would be perfect for picnics. And, a bit of black gloss with gold accents any table setting. Those lids, as bowls are perfect for my soy sauce, ginger and dipping sauces with sushi. How great would profiteroles with hot fudge look on these plates? Need I go on? My friend received these as a wedding gift in the late 1950\'s. They went into storage and have just been found, never used. The glossy lacquer ware has no flaws or wear on the gold trim. You are seeing lots of reflections, no flaws. The only mystery is: where are those lost 3 plates? Please view my photographs for more description.
