Up for offer is a vintage edition of the \"JFK Coloring Book\".The JFK COLORING BOOK was a 22 page coloring book for adults, conceived in 1962 by Alexander A. Roman along with comedian/writer Jackie Kannon with additional copy by Paul Laikin, and self-published that year as a KANROM book. The great MAD caricaturist Mort Drucker was hired to do the illustrations. It takes a satirical look at the Kennedy White House, narrated by and seen through the eyes of young daughter Carolyn. She briefly introduces the reader to the different family members and friends (Frank Sinatra, etc), policy makers, and political leaders. The book sold several million copies upon its release, but of course all but disappeared from the shelves the following year due to certain unforeseen circumstances.
Political coloring books had their fad years between 1962 and sometime in the early 1970\'s. There are psychological reasons why this fad faded. Laura Marsh, in the New Republic say that the coloring books were meant to ridicule (hence the JFK book you see here being \"inspired by R. Nixon\". These books were meant as a form of political cartoon, rather than entertain with actual coloring (most aren\'t colored in - unless you had a child that colored anything inside lines without caring what type of book it was), you were meant to look inside and laugh. Later coloring books lampooned the obvious, and thus became a little more tired. By the 1970\'s, there were attempts to revive political coloring books, but they fell flat. Perhaps, because the satirical edge was off, and people just really wanted to color without being \"taught\" anything. Current political coloring books have not surpassed the adult coloring books you see on the shelves today. They lack a certain edge to them, perhaps it\'s the style of the artist and the writing. Maybe it\'s the subject. Now, the particulars of this edition. This book is in excellent shape for being 54 years old. It has aged better than I have. As mentioned before, there aren\'t any crayon marks in the book, There\'s one small spot on the Peter Lawford page right at the edge. No water stains, or mildew to be seen. At the last page, there is a missing corner, but it looks like it was torn out rather than broken off. This book must have been kept anywhere other than the garage! Because it\'s older paper, it does have the yellowing common to paper of the era, but it\'s not falling apart.
Dimensions of the book are 13\" x 10\". Actual colors of the JFK logo on the cover is a darker red J, a teal F, with the same colors for the K.
