The present piece is an important 1970ies Space Age / Atomic Age vintage Van Cleef & Arpels ruby and diamond necklace with geometric design. The necklace comprises a fantastic drop pendant in a hexagonal shape having a 4.59 carat natural Mogok“pigeon blood” color ruby centerpiece surrounded by a cluster of square and baguette cut diamonds. The oval cut ruby is lightly included with a good dark red color that measures 11.11x9.39x5.8mm with estimated weight in the 4.59 carats range. The ruby was inspected by an HRD certified gemologist and confirmed to be natural and ofMogok origin with little to no heating. The necklace is constructed of alternating yellow gold and BLACK platinized platinum links. Every single yellow gold link is hallmarked with French 18 karat eagle marks. The black platinum is crafted through a very tough and uneasy jewelry process of platinization of platinum and such pieces are scarcely seen or ever produced. Each of the black platinum links is 9.25mm wide and the whole necklace is about 450mm long, while the chain itself is 410mm long. On each of the yellow gold chain links there are groups of 4 round brilliant cut diamonds with an average diameter of 2.3mm, total number of diamonds being 112 pieces with total estimated diamond weight of about 4 carats. The ruby centerpiece is surrounded by another 28 channel set square and baguette cut diamonds of similar sizes and additional estimated diamond weight of 1.25 carats. At the very top above the ruby pendant there is a single larger square cut diamond measuring 3.5x3.5x1.9mm and having an estimated weight of 0.20 carats. Total diamond weight throughout the whole necklace is 5.45-5.50 carats. All diamonds exhibit a fantastic E-F color and VVS clarity. The detachable ruby pendant is similar to the rest of the necklace and made with a construction of black platinum and yellow gold. Size is 25.5x23.2mm without the clasp section and 37.6x23.2mm with clasp. The depth of the pendant is also very large and measures about 11mm deep. Gross weight of the necklace is 83.1 grams.

Another scarce and importantfeature of the necklace is that it is a transformable necklace / bracelet / pendant jewel, where one can detach it in three separate parts, so as to be able to form two bracelets (one with a ruby charm pendant) or a bracelet and a ruby pendant that can be attached to any other chain. Except for the French 18K hallmarks, each yellow gold link of the necklace is also marked by one of the Van Cleef & Arpels’ workshops with a maker’s mark “S-te. A” with a keyhole in the middle in a rhombus shaped cartouche, which stands for the legal registration of the firm “ Société Anonyme Arpels”. The necklace is signed “Van Cleef & Arpels – Made in France” at reverse of the pendant, as well as numbered accordingly.

A nearly identical by design necklace by Van Cleef & Arpels and from same period of time has been offered for sale through Christie’s in Feb. 2007 (Sale 1343 / Lot 106), whereas the black platinum links are made of onyx and there is no ruby centerpiece, but clusters of smaller diamonds. Nevertheless, it is strikingly identical by design (see attached reference image).
