Vintage 1979 Joe David Nuu-chah-nulth Hawk Print Edition of 225 Signed New:
$1400.00

This is a rare print by one of the true masters of Northwest Coast Native American Art, Joe David. Measuring 20\" x 26\" and dated 1979, this print was created as part of the \'1979 Northwest Coast Indian Artists Guild Series\'. This means that it was considered to be one of the best prints created during that year, and a quintessentially \"Nuu-chah-nulth\" or \"Nootka\" style of work. Less often depicted than Raven, Eagle or Thunderbird, the Hawk nevertheless takes its place in the spiritual world of the supernatural and inspires interesting designs for masks, rattles and silver jewellery as well as prints. The Hawk is often associated with the Sun and is revered for its superior vision and skill in hunting. Hawk depictions are similar to Eagle, but the beak is generally shorter and usually is even more dramatically hooked towards the mouth or recurved. Hawks might also be seen with teeth. In 1966, Joe David attended art school in Markos, Texas and Seattle, Washington. He worked as a commercial artist until 1969 when he decided to return to Native art. Joe apprenticed with Dwane Pasco and Frank Charlie and has also worked with Ron Hamilton and Russel Spatz. He assisted Bill Reid with the totem pole for Skidegate Council Chambers House and attended Bill Holm’s classes at the University of Washington on Native art. Joe carved a totem pole for Expo 1974 in Spokane, Washington. He was also commissioned to carve two large welcome figures for Expo \'86 in Vancouver. These welcome figures are now located in the international arrival lounge at the Vancouver International Airport. Joe has had exhibits at the BC Provincial Museum, Museum of Anthropology and The Legacy Gallery. In 2005, Joe was featured in the \'Changing Hands: Art without Reservation 2\' exhibit at the Museum of Art and Design in New York. He has recently started creating unique, Nuu-chah-nulth jewellery, which was featured in a 2005 art exhibition in Seatlle titled \'Engraved in Tradition\'. He is one of the most collected and celebrated artists working today.\"joe david native\", \"hawk spirit\", \"hawkeye poster\", \"marvel hawkeye\", \"nootka art\"
