This listing is for a vintage 19th Century Sterling Silver Soup Ladle. Makers Mark is a rectangle with letters M C inside. There are 4 pictorial markingsdifficult to make out with exception of 3rd: appears to look like a \"u\" and the 4th: appears to look like a cameo portrait.
The ladle has been passed down in our family. My father-in-law who fought in WWII was an avid collector and history buff. His notes indicate that this ladle came from \"my mother\'s great grandmother Buhagan\" which would place it in the 1800\'s.
In doing research on the maker\'s mark, I found a rectangular mark with \"M C\" initials could possibly be that of London\'s Mary Chawner, the daughter, sister and wife of silversmiths, who took over her husband\'s (William Chawner) business to support herself when he died in 1834. Their specialty was flatware making.
Based on my father-in-law\'s comment on family ownership and Mary Chawner\'s 1834-1840 company, time frame would seem to synch or coincide.
Condition: Structurally excellent, sturdy, heavy. I see light scratches throughout. To my knowledge this hasn\'t been polished or deep cleaned for many many years.

Length: Total length of ladle is 13-1/4\". Handle measures 10-1/2\". Scoop is 4\" in length, 3-1/2\" wide, depth 1-3/4\".
Weight: Approximate 7.4oz. Converting to grams would make that approximately 209g.
