\"Please check my other listings for more unusual and vintage silver;I am always happy to combine shipping whenever safely possible to save you money!\"This is a vintage 200g silverplate rosewater sprinkler of probable first-half 1900\'s Moroccan origin. There is no brass seen internally.The mark is a crown with Arabic script. I can\'t read the writing on the base so I am selling it as silverplated over base metal (photo shown) as I can\'t definitively say more. I think I may see \"..El TAJ\" at the bottom of the base mark, so this may have a link to the Taj Mahal. I do know that rosewater was traditionally sprinkled on guests in India because it has cooling and refreshing properties. The tradition of using rosewater came to Mughal India from Iran, where, in the festival of Ab Pashan, rosewater was sprinkled to invoke the memory of rainfall, which would put an end to famine. The custom was gradually incorporated into the Rajput court, where it was used in both ceremonial as well as religious festivals. It is now used in India to welcome arriving guests.Occasionally used in elder times in courting ritual, sprinkled on the hands.
The long fluted neck unscrews to become two pieces and is how you add the delicately scented rosewater. There is a tiny hole at the top of the neck, very small so that guests are lightly sprinkled rather than soaked. I have also seen this item identified with Judaic properties; please judge for yourself.
Measures about 9-3/4\" by 2-3/4\" at the widest point; 2\" base. Weighs 200g prior to packaging. Will be well packaged to maintain integrity in mailstream and ship insured at the 2 lb rate.
Lovely condition. No dents or stains. Light polish brought out a keen shine. Minimal internal powdering from previous use. No odor. Found in a collector\'s box of silver from many origins. The leaning seen in the last photo is camera tilt; the item stand straight.
