Description
Craftool Company was the oldest and best known leather stamping tool manufacturer in the USA. Their tools were hand ground and hand finished for decades by trained craftsmen. The older tools made prior to the early 1960\'s, were marked with only a number. The factories where these were once made no longer exists and thus these older Craftools with no letter prefix have become highly collectible, not just because they are no longer made, but because they work. In fact, there is probably more leatherwork being done today with these old tools than any other brand available.
If you go back far enough in the history of leather carving tools, you will find that tools were not even numbered at one time. Leather craftsmen didn\'t need a number to tell them what a tool was. They just looked at it and determined if it would do the job they wanted. There are a few of these tools still circulating that were made by Craftool Co. and have no numbering on them. This appears to be one of those tools.
It is a Mule\'s Foot Scale Stamp, which is similar to tool number 356. The knurling and style is similar to a Craftool Co. tool, but no markings are found on this stamp. The tool measures a little over 1/8\" in width and 5/32\" in height. ThisScale Stamp is a great example of why many serious leather stampers prefer these vintage tools. The crispness and precision of these hand ground tools is beautiful and they are tools you would be proud to own because they perform the way they were intended.
