I proudly present this metal box for a unique 9-/12 - 10-1/2 Erector set in tip-top condition.
This is for a serious collector. I usually throw away these boxes as they tend to be rusty.
The size of the box is 13\" x 22\" x 3. Weighs about 11# and I have a perfect shipping container for it that brings the weight up to only 14#
Why is this box unique?
Back in the early 50\'s, most Erector Sets were made for toy stores and chains like Sears, Montgomery Wards, and Western Auto. (Remember them?)
Department Stores needed something different to compete. Something with \"a little extra.\"
My family owned a Department Store with a Toy Department in Connecticut - 15 miles from the Gilbert Hall of Science.
At 14, I had special work papers and sold Erector Sets and expensive dolls in our department store\'s Toy Department at Xmas.
I think this was one of our special Department Store Sets.
It had a larger box than the 8-1/2 - but has the picture of the 8-1/2, the Ferris Wheel and Power Plant.
However, it had all the parts for the Parachute Jump of the 9-1/2 Set - and even all the parts for the Merry-Go-Round of the 10-1/2 set that may not have even been available at that time. (Perhaps A. C. Gilbert was \"Testing the Waters.\"
I recently purchased this as a complete set on in order to make a Parachute Jump model for an upcoming 2017 exhibit at the Autry Nation Center Museum in Los Angeles. (I built what I could not figure out when I was 12 years old - and with an electric screwdriver.)
Most of the parts I have now listed on came from this and another set - purchased to make the Ferris Wheel.
When I realized that this is a special box, that it is in beautiful condition, and I had the right shipping box - I had to offer it to a serious collector - at a low price to make up for the postage.
I am closing out all my Erector stuff at low prices as I downsize.
