This is a vintage ANRI hand carved \"Peg Nose\"bottle stopper. It is so named because the ANRI carvers inserted a peg to represent the nose. According to the reference book mentioned below, the collector who first found a bottle stopper of this type believed it to be simply an ugly stopper made by someone who probably flunked out of carving school. Happily, it was later found to be one of many ANRI stoppers of this type produced during the the 1920s. This particular model was produced by ANRI during the late 1920s. This bottle stopper measures 3 1/2 inches in height including its cork stopper. Whether or not this is the original cork stopper I do not know. I assume that it is. Note that it does allow the \"Peg Nose\" to stand on its own. It is in very excellent condition with some fading consistent with its age. Pictures of a somewhat similar \"Peg Nose\" bottle stopper appear on page 141 of \"anri Woodcarvings\" by Philly Rains and Donald Bull.
