Vintage Antique Large Stick Wood Putz Sheep (dog?) Stick Leg Germany Nativity:

This is a large (and rather scary) putz stick wood sheep (or perhaps dog? ... doesn\'t look like a sheep to me ... but all of these were typically sheep or other nativity animals) from Germany. I do not know if the paint on the face is original, but I tend to believe that it is because it doesn\'t seem that there are layers of paint on the face. Both plastic eyes are still attached.
It is very large compared to similar items I\'ve seen ... approximately 6 inches high, 6.5 inches long (from nose to tail), and about 2 inches wide. The legs are solid and strong - not broken. I believe that the ribbon around the neck and \"saddle\" with ribbon are original. It is difficult to read but on the bottom of the blue \"saddle\" ribbon it is stamped \"Germany\" in purple ink. The \"saddle\" is another curious aspect as I don\'t know why that would be on either a sheep or a dog in a nativity set.
There is one leg shown from several angles in the pictures where the wool has pulled away from the wood a bit. Overall it is relatively good condition for the age ... but there are also some chips around the plaster at the mouth and the wool coat is fairly dirty from age.
The shape of the face along with the long ears make it look much more like a dog to me than a sheep. However, the wooden feet make it look as it typically should for a putz wood leg sheep used in German nativity scenes. If you are an expert in these figure and have some information to share on the odd shape of the face, odd painting of the face, presence of the \"saddle\" etc ... I would love to know so that I could update the description.
