Here\'s a really lovely antique hanging valentine from Ernest Nister/E.P. Dutton, printed in Bavaria. It\'s made up of three embossed die-cut hearts strung together with red ribbon. Each cream-colored heart is edged with gold and decorated at the top with cherries and green leaves. Each has an illustration of a pretty girl or young woman within a smaller gold heart. The top heart shows a blonde in profile, wearing a rather Grecian looking dress in robin\'s egg blue. She has ribbons wrapped around her head and she is holding something in her hand. Not sure what it is.

The middle heart shows a redhead wearing a red jacket with fur trim, and a blue-green hat. She carries a white fur muff. The bottom heart shows a strawberry blonde wearing a blue empire-waist gown with leg-of-mutton sleeves. She holds something in her hand...some kind of blade? Not sure.

The flirtatious verse is titled \"Old Time Lovers,\" and reads: \"Your lips are like a little cherry/Always laughing always merry./Round and red and oh, so sweet./May I kiss them when we meet?\" The bottom card is marked \"London: Ernest Nister,\" \"New York: E.P. Dutton & Co.,\" \"Printed in Bavaria,\" and \"No. 413.\" The card is also signed in black ink: \"Fran\" and the date \"Feb 14, 1905\" or possibly \"1903,\" it\'s hard to tell.

There is no printed artist\'s signature, but it may be Frances Brundage, who is thought to have done at least one other valentine heart topped with cherries, similar to this.

Note: these pictures were taken at night with the light source a bit to the right, so it may appear that the left side of the cards is a bit darker, but it\'s not in daylight.

Each heart (with leaves) measures 4-1/4 x 3-1/2 inches. When spread out, the total length of the set, including the ribbon, is roughly 12-3/4 inches. The card is signed in ink. Seems to be in good condition other than some red marks on back of the bottom heart, a few light scratches or small worn spots on front, and some wear and tear (literally, some tearing) to the ribbon, mostly at the top. sale does not include an envelope.
