The Victorians surely loved the color black, primarily because mourning periods were so long. By the time one mourning period had ended, another loved one had passed, launching a second mourning period. Everyone, including children, wore black.
This is a child\'s folding mourning parasol, fashioned out of black silk taffeta. It is edged with a double taffeta ruffle with scalloped edges. Since they were merely cut, not hemmed, they are fraying. I believe the handle is wood, covered with a thick black coating.
Silk taffeta is a fragile fabric that does not age well. However, in this case, the taffeta is still intact. This is the first silk taffeta parasol I\'ve ever seen that isn\'t ripped to shreds. It must have been stored in a hope chest to remain in such great condition.I haven\'t opened it all the way because I don\'t want to be the one to damage it. Although the fabric is still intact, you can see where it probably would rip if it weren\'t handled with care.
It measures 25 1/2\" long from the handle to the top. The fabric section is 10\" long from the edge to the center. Fully opened it would be 20\" in diameter.
Because of its size,this would also be a great antique accessory for doll collectors.
