The beads have the appearance of amber, but test faintly as bakelite with semichrome. I believe they may be some sort of composite material composed of actual amber and phenolic resin (bakelite). The strand measures approx 17 1/2\" long x 9/16\" at its widest. The condition is excellent and the beads have been recently re-strung with a newer sterling silver clasp.
