Vintage Cigarette Raffle Ticket Jar with Tickets, Circa 1950\'s - 60\'s:
$62.50

This item is a cigarette raffle jar that was used in bar settings in the 1950\'s - 60\'s.The label on this jar reads, \'Original State Sales Cigarette Jar Deal\'.This jar stands 8 1/2\" tall, and measures 6 1/2\" wide and 6 1/2\" deep. There is the exact same label on both sides. Each ticket was a nickle, with the chance to win hundreds of smokes. When the bar owner bought a full jar of tickets, he knew exactly how much he would stand to make if he sold all the tickets.I believe each jar held 2000 tickets, and with each ticket costing a nickle, that comes to $100.After spending maybe $10. on cigarettes for prizes, the owner stood to make a healthy profit of $90.It was cheap source of amusement for the patrons, and it was a slippery way around gambling laws for the owners.Bar patrons would slide a nickle over the bar, and then dip their hand in the jar looking for a lucky winner!I still remember when jars of chance like this were kept behind the bar, right next to the tasty pickled pigs feet, pickled hard boiled eggs, and foot long Slim Jims.We called it a ham and egg dinner with steak on the side. And it was all washed down with with a glass of beer for fifteen cents or a mug for 30 cents. There was an ash tray for every customer, cigarettes were 15 cents a pack, and the country music twanged until the early hours of the morning. The smell of stale smoke and spilled beer permeated the place. And the surgeon general had yet to inform the public that smoking was bad for you.In those days of nicotine fueled innocence, these Tobacco laden games of chance were a main staple in the blue collar bars of America.I have been unable to find another example of one of these jars on any website, including looking for photos. There are no state or government markings anywhere on the glass jar.The makers of this product also failed to put a company name and address on the label. That way if a state tried to prosecute the manufacturer, they could claim innocence. There are currently 357 unopened tickets in the jar, and 6 opened tickets.None of the open tickets are winners. This jar is a left over relic from another era, with few clues to where it came from. These tickets would make a great conversation piece about bars and how they have changed with the times. This rare and special jar of chance would make a great addition to any home bar or man-cave!It\'s a great piece of Americana tobacciana history all wrapped up in a labeled glass jar.Your guests will be impressed when they see this interesting piece of history sitting on your shelf.
