The exact age of this carving is unknown, but I sent images to the Easter Island Heritage foundation, they said they could not identify the carver but that the workmanship was outstanding, and that this was more then likely a more modern carving (as opposed to an antique.)I purchased this from a man who claimed to be part of the location scouting team for the :Lord of the Rings trilogy while they were on Easter Island. He also had some very nice Rongo boards for sale.
This statue is 26.75\" tallthe base if 4\" x 2.25\"
I am not sure what the eyes are made of or what variety the wood is, however the wood is a very nice quality and the finish is very smooth.IT has a very different base to it carved in more of a tiki fashionThis status have very nice detail in the carving as you can see form the images.The legs were at one time glued into the base but over the years have worked loose. I did not want to reglue ( I will leave that to the buyer if they so choose)
Issues:There is a scratch on the back side of the base that could be repaired by restaining and buffing out.There is a flaw in the wood that runs the length of the body but it is stable and not separating it appears to be a natural element of the wood and has been there since the original carving.on one leg there is some areas that look like a little more stain was applied (this was there when I purchased it) (I have had it since 2002)the buttocks have a couple little dings in the wood that also appear to have been there since the beginningit is a little dusty.. and needs a little TLC.
This is probably the finest looking Birdman that is currently listed and/ or has been listed for some time. Though not as old as some of them,
