José Benítez Sánchez, known in the Huichollanguage as Yucauye Cucame, or \"Silent Walker\" was born in1938 on a ranch called San Pablito, in Nayarit. His religioustradition and family ties link him to the Huichol sub-group of Wautüa(the community of San Sebastián Teponohuaztlán).
JoséBenítez came to be recognized as an undisputed master of originaldramatic compositions, and his knowledge of the culture was respectedby scores of other specialists in this medium. He remains unsurpassedin the fertility and inventiveness of his art over the long span ofhis career; he passed away on 1 July 2009.

His father was afamous mara’akáme. Benitez credits his own path as a shaman to arevelation following an illness when he was fifteen, after which heset off on his first pilgrimage to Wirikuta. Benitez pursued the dualpaths of shaman and artist almost from the start, and has beenrecognized as a master since the 1970’s. He pioneered a style offluid figures in compositons which are dynamic, complex, and colorfulto the point of being psychedelic. His success as an artist coincidedwith his growing stature in his own community. He helped found theindigenous community of Tsitákua, and was elected its first tatoani,or governor. Benitez’ work has been exhibited world-wide, and isincluded in many private and public collections. In addition to thesubstantial collection which was exhibited at the University ofPennsylvania his work is included in the collection at the UCLAFowler Museum of Cultural History and the Museum of Modern Art in Mexico City in 1986.

Benitez was the subject of MythicVisions: Yarn Paintings of a

Huichol Shaman, the dazzling 2003 exhibit at the Universityof

Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology. The

paintings reflect the visions of Huichol shamans - Huicholhistory

and mythology and especially the peyote-inspired visionsthrough

which they believe they can communicate with the deities toheal

themselves and their world.
