This twenty piece set of “fèves” inpainted faïence is made up ofthe Holy Family, the Wise Men, eleven traditional Provencal crechecharacters, asheep, a donkey and an ox. The Provencal characters includes the drummer, thewater carrier, the “Arlesienne”, the miller, two peasant women, thepriest, two piping shepherds,an old shepherd and a youngshepherdwitha lamb. The tradition offèves(“broadbeans” in French), orminiature santons, is linked to the tradition ofthe“Galette des Rois” (the King\'scake),and traditionally eaten on Epiphany,the 6th ofJanuary.Epiphany is the day which celebrates the arrival of the threeKings (Wise Men or Magi) at the manger in Bethlehem. The person who receivesthe “fève” in their piece of the “galette”, is king for theday and gets to wear a paper crown which is sold with the galette at thebakery.Originally these little figurines were always religious and theultimate aim was to collect a whole Nativity scene including thevillagers,over the years completing the set and handing it down fromgeneration to generation, just like with the larger Nativity scenes. Todaychildren in France still collect fèves.Thesefèvesare in verygood condition with the exception of signs of wear due to age and use.Theywill add a charming atmosphere of Provence to your home or be anexcellent addition to your collection!
