This vintage box is a Japanese Haribako or Sewing box. It has 4 graduated drawers on the front and one shallow one under the elevated box on top (probably for pins or needles). The elevated box was used like sewing birds were used in the U.S. Instead of having a clamp, a loop of thread was looped over a pin in a pincushion anchored in the box with the other end looped over a pin in the fabric the lady was working on. It acted as a third hand and was easily moved along as the sewer progressed. The contents are not included and I promise to have them cleaned out before this is mailed. This is 19 inches tall x 9 inches wide and 10 inches deep. This would be a great addition to a sewing collection. I haven\'t identified the wood, but I\'m sure it\'s native to Japan. The red fabric fold that was put in to use as a pincushion will still be there. I don\'t know it\'s age, but we\'ve had it at least 25 years. Email if you have questions.The small print.
