This piece measures 3 inches high by 5 inches wide. Ema, which means a picture of a horse in Japanese, was originally that, a wooden board with a painted picture of a horse. People wrote their wishes and prayers on the Ema and presented it to the shrine or the temple.
Although in the beginning people presented actual horses when they made a wish, over the years people came to present pictures of horses instead. Today, Ema with other motifs are often used to make wishes as well.
It depicts a type of long-tailed rooster called the Onagadori (dori means bird). A cross between a pheasant and a Totenko (brown domestic fowl), Onagadori is a very rare bird and its tail can be up to 10 meter long. In the olden days, the feathers of long tail rooster were used for very special occasions to adorn the helmets and spears to honor the Emperor.
The inscription on the piece reads \"prayer for good luck and happiness, Daikokuten, Enjuin, Kanotori (Year of the Rooster). The original owner dated the piece that reads \"New Year Prayer Visit, January 24th, 56th Year of Showa period (1981)\" and \"Echiya.\" Echiya is probably the name of the shop.
It originated from Enjuin in Tokyo, a Nichiren Buddhist sect temple that was founded in 1730. Its main deity is Daikoku. Daikoku is one of the Seven Lucky Gods. The condition is very good.
