Vintage Japanese Sewing Box / Haribako / Tansu / Jewelery Box w Secret Stash Box:

This is a Japanese wood sewing box from the early to mid 1900\'s The insides (drawers) are made of paulownia (Kiri) a very light weight Asian wood. The outside is made of what we think is mahogany covered with a veneer. There\'s a slot in the upper right corner of the right side where a ruler would have been stored. This one did not come with the ruler.

The sewing box is 10 inches high (25.5 cm), 12 1/2 inches wide (32 cm) and 7 1/2 inches deep (19 cm).It weighs just over 5 pounds (2.3 kilo)

One thing very cool about this box is it hasa secret stash box inside. Lift up the top lid and you see a general storage under the lid. If you press against the sides you can lift out theentire section(photo # 9). Behind it and under the back is another box. You can see it with a finger hole inits side in photo # 9. Pull this box out with the finger hole (It helps if you have a small lady like finger) and it will slide out. You can see it outside in photo # 10. On the far left of the box inside the lid is a slot for a piece of wood that functions as a kick stand.Pull this up, drop it in the slot provided for this and it keeps the lid open for easy access.This is shown in photo # 11.

In this era awomen would often make the kimonos for the house hold, repair the ones they had as well as futons and anything else that needed repairing material wise. This was a woman\'s tool box. And because they were so necessary and so often used, like many of the everyday but necessary items in Japan, they were made beautifully. These boxes are often used as jewelry boxes or for the storage of small items.
