Vintage Japanese Sewing Box / Haribako / Tansu / Jewelery Box w Secret Stash Box:
$117.50

This is a Japanese wood sewing box from the mid 1900\'s. The insides (drawers) are made of paulownia (Kiri) a very light weight Asian wood. The outside is made of a lacquered Japanese cedar. There were some flowers done in mother of pearl on the drawer fronts but most of the mother of pearl has come off. This is about 60 yeas old and the lacquer has seen a lot of use. Please look closely at the photos please. It\'s 10 1/4 inches high (26 cm), 12 1/2 inches wide (32 cm) and 7 1/2 inches deep (19 cm).It weighs 5 1/2 pounds (2.6 kilo).

One thing very cool about this box is it hasa secret stash box inside. Lift up the top lid and you see a general storage under the lid. (photo # 7) There is a kiri wood lid on top of this area that can be lifted out using the finger hole in the middle. After that if you press against the sides you can lift out theentire section(photo # 9). Behind it and under the back is another box. You can see it with a finger hole inits top(again photo # 9). Pull this box out with the finger slot (It helps if you have a small lady like finger) and it will slide out. You can see it outside in photo # 10. On the far right of the box inside the lid is a slot for a piece of wood that functions as a kick stand.Pull this up, drop it in the slot provided for this and it keeps the lid open for easy access. This is shown in the last two photos with it in the \"up\" position

In this era awomen would often make the kimonos for the house hold, repair the ones they had as well as futons and anything else that needed repairing material wise. This was a woman\'s tool box. And because they were so necessary and so often used, like many of the everyday but necessary items in Japan, they were made beautifully. These boxes are often used as jewelry boxes or for the storage of small items.
