Weare pleased to offer this early 20th Century, Indonesian, Javanese, woodenfolk theater dance mask, C. 1920s. Such masks were used in a dramatic form ofIndonesian dance theater in which ornately costumed performers interpretedtraditional narratives about fables, heroes and myths accompanied by music.Hand-carved, this mask represents the character Jinggananom, a rebelliousfighter in dance drama whose dance describes the disposition of human life withother heroes and villains depicting man’s strengths and weaknesses. This maskhas been painted brown overall with traces of red within the mouth. Slits arebeen carved within the wood underneath the bulbous eyes, as nostrils, and inbetween the teeth. Holes appear on each side for the attachment of cording.Please note, this piece shows signs ofwear commensurate with age and use including smoothed inner surfaces (from placement upon a face) and chipping of the paint.
