TrueBlue Willow was actually created in England by Josiah Spode and dates back toas early as 1790. Spode created the pattern with a little known and seldom toldlove story:

Thestory is that Hong Shee, a beautiful Asian girl, fell in love with her wealthyfather\'s butler, Chang. The father foroffers their relationship, and thetwo lovers escaped to sea by boat. The boat sank in a storm and bothlovers drowned and are said to be reincarnated as two birds flying high in thesky in the pattern. The story is well represented in the pattern and youcan even see the father in the temple in hot pursuit of the escaping Hong Sheeand Chang. Some stories have it that the three men on the bridge are partof an army that the father sent out trying to catch the two before they gotaway.

Johnson Bros History:

Alfred, Frederickbegan production at the Charles Street works, Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent in 1883 for the manufacture ofdurable Earthenware, which they called \"White Granite\".
In 1888, Henry joined them. In addition to manufacturing well-pottedwhite ware, they began producing under-glaze printed ware for which they becamefamous. Due to the increased demand for pottery after the Civil War, theyopened up two new factories in Hanley close to their original factory. By 1898,they had five different factories producing tableware. [Charles Street works,Imperial Works, Hanley Works & Trent Works in Hanley and the Scotia Road works in Tunstall).

Robert moved to NewYork in the United States of America around 1896 to establish a presence in thetableware market that was emerging. Johnson Brothers tableware was becomingvery popular in America due to its inexpensive and durable product.
Johnson Brothers continued its growth in the tableware industry into World WarI. The war taxed the company\'s work force, shipping capabilities, and rawmaterials supplies. When the war was over, production was able to resume at itspre-war pace.

At the start of theTwenties, new shapes, patterns, and bodies were introduced and the\"Dawn\" range of colored bodies began for which Johnson Brothersbecame very well known. New methods were developed for making halloware itemswhich allowed for a more rapid production over the old method of using pressedclay. At the end of the Twenties, the grandsons of the founders entered thebusiness.

During the Thirtiesthe Charles Street Works, the original factory was closed. It was not until themid-Thirties that the factories got under full production. At the end of theThirties, was seen the development of modern systems of firing usingelectricity as fuel rather than raw coal and new brick-built tunnels using anautomatic ware-propelling system replaced the traditional \"BottleOvens.\" The more accurately controlled firing system meant better qualityand less loss and the conditions for the workers was much more superior thanbefore. A new mold-making department and making shops accompanied theconstruction of the electric kiln.

The Second World Warcame and nearly halted production at Johnson Brothers factories. Although astruggle, the company managed to survive this hardship with sporadic shipmentsof product to the United States. War damage and the need for increased productivitydictated a major overhaul of the Johnson Brothers factories. Modern equipmentand larger facilities were installed to improve the day-to-day productioncapability of the company. Various plants in England, Canada, and Australiawere purchased for decorating and glazing and firing of pieces.

In 1968, to offeraccess to even larger markets, and to remain competitive, Johnson Brothersjoined the Wedgwood Group. Several other manufacturers including Meakin (theJohnson Brother\'s maternal Grandfather\'s company), Coalport, Adams, Midwinter,Crown Staffordshire, and Mason\'s joined, as well.
Around 2000 the tableware division of Johnson\'s mover to the nearby J & GMeakin Eagle Pottery works where they produced until 2004 when manufacturingwas transferred abroad. The Eagle Pottery works were demolished in 2005.
