An awesome New York City collectors piecefrom the Murray Hill Hotel in New York City.. For those who are not familiar with thelavish hotel built at 112 Park Avenue New York City that first opened its doors in1884, few expenses were spared in furnishing the 600 room hotel, having almost every furnishing custom including the spittoons. If you would pull up the Murray Hotel on Wikipedia you can\'t help but not notice the extravagant design and décor. And if you go to Architecture and Fittings on the web site you will see a photo of the lobby and sitting on the floor oneach end of the long marble registration counter is a spittoon, as well as on each side of the marble staircase. There is no question that the spittoon up for sale came from theMurray Hill Hotel -it is marked as such on the bottom (see photo 3). It is also clearly marked as the manufacture being Reed and Barton with a Model number of 1156-S and is silver soldered. The spittoon is scratched, dinged and dented to some extent. Thebrimis not straight and has a wave to it as well as the bottom chime. Spittoon measures approximately 5 1/2 inches high. The brim is 8 1/2 inches in diameter. The bottom base measures approximately 8 1/8 in diameter. I have made no attempt at cleaning this item since acquired... An excellent Christmas gift for any New York City memorabilia collector. I have never seen another spittoon stamped Murray Hill Hotel in person or for sale and I question how few are still in existence.....
