United Press International (UPI) was a news service in competition with the Associated Press in the mid-20th century. UPI was famous for scooping the story when President John F. Kennedy was assassinated on November 22, 1963. (President Kennedy is in the news again right now because this is the centennial of his birth.)
UPI and American Heritage Magazine went together on the publication of these two books about noteworthy deaths at that time. As far as I can find out, there were only three such books published: these two, and a later book on President Dwight D. Eisenhower when he died in 1969.
FOUR DAYS: The Historical Record of the Death of President Kennedy was published in 1964. It takes the reader from the day the President was killed through the weekend when Lee Harvey Oswald was arrested for the crime and then killed by Jack Ruby, to the day of the President\'s funeral in Washington, D.C. Historian Bruce Catton wrote the introduction.
In 1965, Winston Churchill died at the age of ninety. CHURCHILL: THE LIFE TRIUMPHANT (subtitled The Historical Record of Ninety Years) is a journalistic look at the life and achievements of the man who led Great Britain through the Second World War. Henry Anatole Grunwald wrote the biographical essay, and Dwight D. Eisenhower provided the introduction.
Both books are 144-page hardcovers (I don\'t believe there were ever dust jackets). The Kennedy book was sold to the public through the newspapers; this copy was sold by the Albuquerque Tribune. No such indication is made for the Churchill book.
The books are used, of course, and show it. But the texts are clean. They would be good as reading/studying copies, and I think high school/homeschool students would benefit from reading them when they study this period of history.
