This superb oil on Masonite panel measures only 10 3/8” x 17” and captures abstract organic forms on a shoreline in thinly applied paint with prominent brushwork and gestural application. It is fully inscribed on the back, “Moor Outcrop 1959/Meadow Studio Newlyn Penzance”. Alexander Mackenzie (1923-2002) was one of the influential members of the St. Ives School who, along with Barbara Hepworth and Ben Nicholson, painted in an abstract style strongly influenced by the light and environs of the Cornwall coast. His work was included in several seminal exhibitions of Modern British Art in the middle 1900s and mark Rothko and Clement Greenberg were among his fans/visitors in the 50s and 60s.
