A LITTLE HISTORY

NOMA (also N.O.M.A. and NOMA Electric, NOMA Lites, Inc and NOMA World Wide after about 1968.) was an acronym for the National Outfit Manufacturers Association, this company was by far the largest Christmas lighting company in the world during its time of operation.

General Electric and Westinghouse came out with a Ceramic Coated or Glazed Bulb. They were painted on the outside, but then a glossy coating was put on them. These didn\'t crack, flake or fade and were very popular.

In 1926, Eugene Kukla invented a small wooden bead, usually painted red (and sometimes, but rarely, found in green and even blue) that was attached below the outfit light sockets and served to hold the lamp upright on tree branches. It was a common but incorrect belief that Christmas light bulbs would burn longer in an upright position. The C.D. Wood company licensed the manufacturing rights to this invention, and some circa 1926 Wood strings indeed have the bead on them. NOMA became the owner of the rights to manufacture the beads through the 1926 merger with Wood and other companies, and trademarked them as \"Berry Beads\". These beads were used on the majority of NOMA outfits until well after World War II.

DESCRIPTION

This is a vintage decorative \"NOMA\" Christmas light box with aset of 15 sockets with General Electric Ceramic Coated Bulbs, and the famous red Berry Beads. It is Catalog No. 3415. This dates to the pre-war era. The plug and extension plug are black, and both are embossed with \"NOMA\" on them. There are 5 spare bulbs.

The set operates inparallel, which means when one bulb burns out or becomes loose, the rest stay lit. A dimmer device would save these bulbs a lot longer and still give you enough light.

This string is in Very Good Condition. It has plastic red and green wiring, 15 black bakelite sockets with the brass threaded insert, an add-on black power plug and a black extension plug. Red Berry Beads were used to hold the light in place on the tree. There is no evidence of any repairs to the string. There is a \"UL\" tagon the cord, with \"NOMA\" on it.The cord is flexible.

The boxis in Very Good Condition. The lid is in rough condition with a lot of wear, some soiling, and some repairs with tape. You do not need the lid to display this set. It is a display type box which requires removing the lid, and lifting the flap in the upward position. The flap is very nice. The insert is very nice, but does have creases on some of the divider tabs. See the pictures. There are directions on the insert. There is no writing on the box. The Box is 18-1/4\" x 6\" x 1-1/2\".

Weight is 21.5 ounces before packaging for shipment.
