Lupe Velez was born on July 18, 1908, in San Luis de Potosi, Mexico, as Maria Guadalupe Villalobos Velez. She was sent to Texas at the age of 13 to live in a convent. She later admitted that she wasn\'t much of a student because she was so rambunctious. She had planned to become a champion roller-skater but that would change. Life was hard for her family, and Lupe returned to Mexico to help them out financially. She worked as a sales girl for a department store for the princely sum of $4 a week. Every week she would turn most of her salary over to her mother, but kept a little for herself so she could take dancing lessons. By now, she figured, with her mature shape and grand personality, she thought she could make a try at show business, and it was a lot more glamorous than dancing or being a sales clerk. In 1924 Lupe started that career on the Mexican stage and wowed audiences with her natural beauty and talent. By 1927 she had emigrated to Hollywood, where she was discovered byHal Roach, who cast her in a comedy withStan LaurelandOliver Hardy.Douglas Fairbankscast her in his feature film,The Gaucho(1927), with himself and wifeMary Pickford. Lupe played dramatic roles for five years before she switched to comedy. In 1933 she played the lead role of Pepper inHot Pepper(1933). This film showcased her comedic talents and helped her to show the world her vital personality. She was delightful. In 1934 Lupe appeared in three fine comedies:Strictly Dynamite(1934),Palooka(1934) andLaughing Boy(1934). By now her popularity was such that a series of \"Mexican Spitfire\" films were written around her. She portrayed Carmelita Lindsay inMexican Spitfire(1940),Mexican Spitfire Out West(1940),The Mexican Spitfire\'s Baby(1941) andMexican Spitfire\'s Blessed Event(1943), among others. Audiences loved her in these madcap adventures but it seemed, at times, she was better known for her stormy love affairs. She married one of her lovers,Johnny Weissmuller, but that only lasted five years and was filled with battles. Lupe certainly did live up to her nickname. She had a failed romance withGary Cooper, who never wanted to wed her. By 1943 her career was waning. She went to Mexico in the hopes of giving herself a jump start. She gained the best reviews yet in the Mexican version ofNaná(1944). Bolstered by that movie, Lupe returned to the US where she starred in her final film as Pepita Zorita inLadies\' Day(1943). There were to be no others. On December 13, 1944, tired of yet another failed romance, with a part-time actor namedHarald Maresch, and pregnant with his child, Lupe committed suicide with an overdose of Seconal. She was only 36 years old.

Comedian, composer, actor, singer and songwriter (\"Inka Dinka Doo\") Jimmy Durante was educated in New York public schools. He began his career as a Coney Island pianist, and organized a five-piece band in 1916. He opened the Club Durant withEddie JacksonandLou Clayton, with whom he later formed a comedy trio for vaudeville and on television. He appeared in the Broadway musicals \"Show Girl\", \"The New Yorkers\", \"Strike Me Pink\", \"Jumbo\", \"Red Hot and Blue\", and \"Stars in Your Eyes\". By 1936, he had appeared at the Palladium in London. Later he had his own radio and television shows, and was a featured headliner in night clubs. BiographerGene Fowlerwrote his biography, \"Schnozzola\". Joining ASCAP in 1941, he collaborated musically with Jackie Barnett andBen Ryan, and his other popular song compositions include \"I\'m Jimmy That Well-Dressed Man\", \"I Know Darn Well I Can Do Without Broadway\", \"I Ups to Him and He Ups to Me\", \"Daddy Your Mamma Is Lonesome For You\", \"Umbriago\", \"Any State In the Forty-Eight\", \"Chidabee Chidabee Chidabee\", and \"I\'m Jimmy\'s Girl\".

The late Hugh Pickett liked to collect stuff. Antiques, art, movie posters, autographed photos of Hollywood stars — his Kerrisdale home was brimming with all sorts of treasures.

Nine years after Pickett’s death, it all went up for sale. On Aug. 26, 1915, Love’s sale in Richmond sold off the Hugh Pickett estate. Thousands of pieces went up for grabs, reflecting the diverse tastes of the impresario who was Vancouver’s top promoter from the 1940s until the 1980s.

He was born Hugh Frank Digby Pickett was born on April 11, 1913 in Vancouver, British Columbia and he went on to be a Canadian impresario who made major contributions to Vancouver’s arts and entertainment scene. He started out as a usher and went on to become a manager and press agent with Theatre Under the Stars and brought many entertainers to town from around the world.

It is hard to overestimate Hugh Pickett’s impact on Vancouver. Pickett led the fight to save the Orpheum Theatre when it was threatened with demolition in the 1970s. He talked the manager at the Hotel Georgia into letting Nat King Cole stay there in the 1950s, breaking the color barrier at the big downtown hotels. He was the promoter behind the Rolling Stones show that turned into a riot in 1972.

As far as Dietrich goes, he was Marlene Dietrich\'s business manager for 12 years and they remained friends for even longer.

According to Gordon Boyd, who was Pickett’s partner for 30 years, he had every photo of Dietrich ever printed and many other unique items from the great lady of cinema.

Mary Pickford, Elvis Presley, Bette Davis, Mae West, Bob Hope, Jack Benny, Tyrone Power, Lillian Gish, Katharine Hepburn, Phyllis Diller, Sir Laurence Olivier, Sir John Gielgud, Margot Fonteyn, Mischa Baryshnikov, Louis Armstrong, Nat King Cole, Igor Stravinsky, Arthur Rubenstein, Maria Callas, Leonard Bernstein — these are only a few of the people Pickett knew or at least met and had memorabilia from.

In 1986, he was made a Member of the Order of Canada in recognition for his involvement with \"Vancouver\'s famed Theatre Under The Stars\".

Pickett died on Feb. 13, 2006, at the age of 92.
