A wonderful early "Raleigh Cycles" enamel sign,
In 1887 entrepreneur, Frank Bowden bought a bicycle, liked the cycle so much he bought the company; he turned the tiny business from three cycles per week, to the largest bicycle manufacturer in the world! It is now also one of the oldest bicycle companies in the world.
This wonderful sign is in original "as found" condition, and has not been re-painted or restored by us
This double sided enamel sign would have been hung on an outside wall and, consequently, it has suffered the usual enamel loss and nibbles to the edges, along with the usual scuffs and scratches that you would expect from an item of this age and use. The fixing holes have rusted through, and the edges are corroded in places.It also has one or two larger dings to the main body. All mentioned for clarity as it is a great sign.
The lettering and the yellow and blue colour of the enamel has a lovely depth of colour and is still bright. Please look at all the photographs for the condition.

wonderful piece of cycling history.
It measures 56 cm (22 inches) high and 46 cm (18 inches) wide.
