Vintage PRE-1963 Col John M Gerrish 19\" Laminated Wooden Boomerang & Instructions.

This RARE boomerang is soldAS ISbecause of some chipping of the glued wooden laminations at the wing-ends & as I have tried to show in the photographs. Also, I am at a loss to explain the gummy material on top of the one wing-end, above the bigger area of chipping. It may be from and attempt to repair the damage that inevitably occurs to thrown boomerangs in the field -- and this would suggest that a really skilled perosn might be able to effect an attractive & functional repair to the wing-ends chipping.

I have NOT attempted repairs because of course I would not wish to impair the oomerang\'s value to serious collectors: The vintage Gerrish boomerang dates from at least 1963, if not before, as is shown by the address with the glued-on instructions -- there is NO Zip Code & these were brought in the year of JFK\'s assassination, fifty-two years ago at this writing.

There is also an undated 8-1/2 x 11 sheet of instructions by the boomerang\'s carver, Col Gerrish.

This particulare Gerrish boomerang measures approximately 19\" at the widest span, STRAIGHT across the space between the two outermost wing ends. It is made of wooden laminations then cut & sanded & varnished to shape & finish the boomerang, above & below. With its curved ventral (top) wings & flat underwings, it is a classic airfoil just as is found in many airplanes especially of the prop-plane era -- and, the boomerang was the invention of mesolithic tribal peoples of many thousands of years ago!

Col John M Gerrish, of Portland, OR,was a great enthusiast of the making of boomerangs & boomerang toys & he has many mentions in Popular Mechanics & other popular technical periodicals especially in the 1950s.
