Description

Thesetwo matchingvases, originating in Japan, feature dragons common in many older Japanese works of art. They possess the raised Japanese decoration known asmoriage, a style popular in the 1800s and early 1900s where small \"beads\" or strings of porcelain are rolled or piped onby hand to the pottery.Both vases exhibit beautifully graceful wispy somewhat smokey or mystical designs on the base glaze which accentuate the appearance of these majestic mythical moriage creatures.Interesting tonote, these dragons are winged which is somewhat atypical of Japanese depictions of dragons. From close to thetop and bottom of each vase the glaze gradually turns from a smokey gray color to deep black as it reaches the edges. The middle of each is a white bone color accented by various shades of pink, blue, green, and white. Both vases are marked \"Made in Japan\" on the bottom and are in superb condition: no chips or missing moriage.

History

Japanese dragons, influenced by thephysically similar Chinese dragons have existed in Japanese artwork since ancient times. Often depicted as gods of water, as opposed to Western depictions of dragons being creatures of fire, they are very prevalent in traditional Japanese pieces. The style of ceramics, moriage, was popular in the late 1800s and early 1900s.
