This pen for sale is a first generation Platinum Karakusa made around 1974 in new condition. It features a beautiful raised Japanese style arabesque etching applied across the entire body in stainless steel.

You can identify a first generation Karakusa by its price tag. First generation pens were priced at 4000 Yen. Platinum raised the price to 6000 Yen for the second generation. This pen comes with its original attached 4000 Yen price tag.

Karakusa is a traditional Japanese art pattern based on the Chinese vine of the same name that grows in Japan and China. The pattern is similar to arabesque, but has stronger curves and idealized spiraling floral shapes. The pattern balances both feminine and masculine line forms. What makes the pattern especially beautiful on this pen is the use of glossy and matte finishes to bring out the design. The flat surfaces of the barrel and cap are done in a matte finish. The raised karakusa design is done in a glossy finish. The result is a design that subtly reveals itself under indirect light and jumps out at you under direct light. Its a memorizing effect.

If you are familiar with Platinum fountain pens from this era, they are wonderful writers. They are smooth and lay down a medium wetness with minimal if any soak through on standard paper. They are also really easy to maintain.
