It has a wind-up mechanism and works great. It is housed in a BLACK Bakelite type plastic case. There are no chips or any cracks to the case. It is marked on the bottom Made in Germany. This metronome was used years ago for piano practice and it ticks loudly. This is a quality metronome and was built to last. It measures 6\" in height by 2 3/4\" wide at the bottom and approx 1 1/2\" deep. It works great. Safely packed delivery in the US will be $6.00.
