Story of the Colima dogs: The animal mostfrequently depicted in Colima, Mexico art is the hairless dog, known asTechichi or Escuincle. It is believed to be a relative of the Chihuahuaand/or the Mexican hairless dog Xoloitzcuintle (derived from Aztec word Xolo(twin brother of Quetzacoatl) and itzcuintle (Aztec word for dog).Pre-Columbian, and existing for more than 3,000 years, this \"Xolo\" isthe first dog of the Americas, believed to be a healer and protector of thehome from both evil spirits and intruders. Believed to have healing powers forthe sick. Believed to accompany their owners to the afterworld. Ceramiceffigies of them have been found in the tombs of the Toltec, Aztec, Mayan,Zapoteca and Colima Indians. Very fat Xolo\'s were eaten by the wealthynoblemen, shamans or honored warriors. Because of the reverence for thesehairless dogs, they are still today depicted in Colima art.
