He has a counterpart, the Pullman Porter who attends to the needs of passengers on trains. These were some of the best jobs offered to African Americans after the Civil War and the Pullman Company helped create the first black middle class in America. By the mid 1920’s more than 20,000 African American men were employed making it the largest category of black labor in the U.S. and Canada at the time. The sterling silver Porter is in nice condition commensurate with age; some enamel loss is present on the hat. It measures approx. 7/8” tall.
