This sale is for an awesome pair of Japanese Arita Toshikane earrings.

The earrings faces are just the sweetest, most captivating pair of sea horses! They are a glorious blue color with a crisp white belly, each scale is perfectly placed with real depth and dimension created by the enamel and accented with the real gold highlights...a glance will tell you they are classic Toshikane porcelian made in Arita, Japan. Potters discovered the first kaolin porcelain clays in Arita in the 1600\'s and have making their world famous Aritawares ever since. In the 1930\'s, potter\'s saw an opportunity in making buttons and silver mounted jewelry. Fabulous flowers, birds and images of Japan were molded into the white porcelain and then had painted in brilliant enamels. We\'ve pictured some of these awesome buttons (including some sea horse buttons) but before you ask, we don\'t have any of these pieces...the pictures are just screen captures for reference. Today these \"Toshikane China\" pieces are highly sought after and collected. The Japanese have a long and deep tradition bound in two religions, the older Shinto beliefs and the later Zen Buddhism. They share a common thread in their perception and respect of nature; the Japanese love to express this understanding through their art...whether that is in the garden, ink on paper or in this case, enameled porcelain.

Our earrings started life circa the 1950\'s as a pair of ladies non pierced screw back earrings. Found in a sale, they were too wonderful to just sit in the back of a jewelry box waiting for their next chance to be worn; they were ripe for updating and we replaced the old screwbacks with vintage styled ear wires made in solid 14k yellow gold. The pad the 14k wires are mounted to are the original gold plated brass screwback pads.

The sea horses measure 27mm long by 19mm wide and hanging 1 and 3/8th inches long in the ear overall. They weigh 5.4 total grams or 2.7 grams each. For reference, a US nickle measures 21.2 in diameter and weighs a much heavier 4.9 grams. The porcelain, the enamels and the earrings overall are in excellent, ready to wear condition.

We are professional jewelers with a eye tuned to see beauty...and we see it every where! Why tear up the earth looking for the next \"new\" thing when there are so many treasures just waiting to be rediscovered and remade. Apparently, a lot of YOU feel the same way because over the last seven plus years we have successfully made and saleed so many, many pairs of fabulous earrings. Every pair of our earrings are signed with a \"A\" in a diamond shape...we stand behind our work and the \"Ace of Diamond\" trademark is the proof.

After removing the old screwbacks, we attached the solid 14k gold ear wires and \"catchers\" using our laser welder. The welder literally uses a laser beam to perfectly fuse the metals together; no sloppy solders or ruinous torch flame. We always use solid 14k so you have \"good\" gold for your ears...we don\'t want less, why would you? Some gals have been nervous about wearing the shepherd hook wires but are always relieved the find that the catchers make them very secure. No more fumbling with (and losing!) little ear nuts...that and the wires give the earrings a sassy, eye catching swing.
