Vintage True Temper Axe Lathing or Shingle Hatchet No.70 Genuine Underhill USA
This tool is referred to as a shingle hatchet, lathing axe, or small axe, depending on where you look. It was originally purposed to fasten lathing to walls prior to plastering, and then used for other purposes. It has a long narrow head ending in a bevelled blade on the end and the bottom of the blade. There\'s a V for pulling nails, and across the top of the blade are 5 holes, and in one of them, and little knurled nut sticks out on each side. Presumably the nut is to preset the depth of a cut or overlap. The striking head is square, about 1 1/4\" across, and has a surface of points, for a true strike. The handle is firmly attached at the top with a wooden and a metal shim, and there is no wiggle at all.
Marked on one side of the head is TRUE TEMPER, GENUINE UNDERHILL, NO. 70.
Size: From the top of the head to the end of the handle, it measures 14\". The head is roughly 6 5/8\" x 1 1/4\" x 2 1/8.\" The end cutting serface is 2\" wide.
