Vintage Warren Wright USMilitary issue Theodolite Meteorological Transitmodel 84 FSN 6660-498-9773. ML474A/GM. DAABO5-70-C1333 US. in a wooden carry case with Hinged top handle.The ML-474-GM is the Mil. Spec. Version of the Warren-Knight Model20-8403series of pilot balloon theodolite. This series was formally produced by David White. Functions as a telescope to look at the moon, stars, and other distant objects.
What is a Meteorological Theodolite?A pilot weather balloon theodolite is a devicethat is similar to a surveyor\'s transit. It consists of a telescope mounted on twomovable axes. One axis (vertical) rotates to change elevation, the other(horizontal) azimuth. There are vernier scales and in some cases micrometers thatgive precise readouts of the relative position of the telescope to each axis. Unlikethe surveyor\'s transit a pibal theodolite utilizes a \"bent axis telescope\".Additionally a pibal theodolite often has the facility to illuminate the crosshairs andreadouts for night time use. Used to chart the direction and velocity of winds at various altitudes just by watchingballoons.The instrument is set up so that it is level and it is pointed towards true north with both scales reading 0 degreesexactly. A balloon is released in front of the theodolite. It is sighted attimed intervals (usually one minute apart) and the position of the theodolite\'s telescope (azimuth andelevation) is recorded.

Sold as is and not guaranteed to be fully functional or complete.mechanically it appears to function correctly as to movement with adjustment knobs. The optics appear to work correctly as to clarity and focus control.The electrical is used to power small lights, which have not been tested. There is a missing toggle switch and what looks to be loose wires that would attach to it. There is some corrosion in the battery box but should clean up nicely.The box is structurally sound but has 1 missing foot, a missing key, and some of the top layer of veneer is pulling away from the plywood on the right side and would need to be re glued. The top is a little rough.Item will be shipped insured for the amount of the purchase price.
