Background

This is a true work ofart by the skilled master craftsmen in Sri Lanka (Ceylon). Craftinga mask was originally reserved for those belonging to families of artisanscoming down generations. The wood of the kadurutree (nux vomica) was almost always used. It is light, easy to carve anddurable.

Sri Lankan masks could be divided in two categories – Kolam masks and Thovil, Sanni Masks.

Dance-drama masks orthe Kolam theatrical masks are used in folk-plays and dramas .In the early 16thcentury Europeans introduced, Sri Lanka to a form of mask dancing knownasKolamfrom south India. These, masks were used for theatricalpurposes and usually had a king’s name to honour it. The performances ofthese masked dancers were mainly for the royalty and the masks were carved bythe carpenters specially retained by the king. These exquisitely made andconserved masks, used for folk theatre, are distinctly different fromdevil-dancing masks. Such masks depict the faces of kings, queens, princes, ministers,men, and animals.

Thoviland Sanni are dance ceremonies toexorcise disease –causing demons. The witch doctors (kattandiyas) impersonate these demons wearing masks and costumes.Some of the masks used in these rituals, like the 18 sanni demons, each have its own, distinctfeatures,symbolizing a particular sannior disease.
