OK Zenith lovers! Here’s another model that is a “must have”. It isthe Transoceanic model A600 AM/SW tube radio from 1958.Theleatherette material on the cabinet has been polished to bring out theoriginal factory finish. The large dial with that gold bezel gives it anoutstanding look. Check out the photos!

This radio plays both the AMbroadcast band and 5 Short Wave bands with that warm, soft “tube sound”. AM reception isthrough the “Wave Magnet”antenna which is attached to the top of the radio. SW uses the telescopingantenna and also has terminals on the back for an extra antenna. It easilypicks up stations up and down the dial. While short wave isn’t what it was in1958, there are still some stations left and can be heard best after dark.The knobs are original including the hard to find brass inserts. It also hasthe original station charts and listener’s log. It has an RCA phono jack with aswitch to allow you to hook up a record changer, iPod or any similar device.

This radio can also be batterypowered. Batteries are not included, but repros are available on the internet.The dial light is powered by 1 “D” cell that I did include.

Thoroughly bench tested for a minimum often days, this unique radio is ready for you to use and enjoy. If yourcollection is lacking a great example of a Zenith Transoceanic radio, now isyour chance. Since it is fully restored you will want to listen to itevery day!

I went through the chassis and replaced all of the electrolytic(filter) capacitors, the major cause of hum. I then replaced all of thewax/paper capacitors. The resistors were then checked and any more than 20% oftheir original value were replaced.All of the tubes were tested using my Precision 612 tube tester. The volume control, tone switches, bandswitches and tuning capacitor were lubed so they now operate smoothly andquietly. The hard to find and expensive ballast tube was replaced with a powerresistor and silicone diode. This gives better voltage regulation and won’tburn out.

Zenith used to use unreliable Selenium rectifiers in a lot of theirradios. As they get old, theserectifiers tend to fail and burn up. I replaced it with a silicone diode forsafety and reliability.

I then carefully cleaned and polished the chassis to a pleasingluster.

Lastly, the intermediate andradio frequencycircuits were aligned to their peak utilizing my HP8601A RF sweep generator and my Leader LS8050 oscilloscope.
